Hello! Thank you for coming here to learn a little bit about me!
My name is Garett Brent York, but you can call me Mr. York. I was born December 26, 1987. That's the day after Christmas! I grew up in a place called Payson, UT: if you've ever seen the movie Footloose you've seen the town I was raised in.
You'll be able to meet my entire family throughout the year: my wife, mom, dad, little brother, and sister-in-law all like to visit our classroom occasionally. Something interesting about the women in my family is that all of them are nurses! It's good to know that the next time I break a finger playing kickball I'll have somebody to take care of me. If you do well enough during our math bees you'll have a chance to go up against my brother, study up because he shows no mercy.
Mrs. York and I were married on July 8, 2009. We chose that date because it is the 7th month's 8th day in the 9th year of the 2000's: 7, 8, 9! It's really easy to remember my anniversary because of that.
My favorite subjects to study while I was in school were History, and Science. When I was a student I hated math! But now that I'm a teacher it is my favorite subject to teach. Weird isn't it?

Becoming a teacher was an easy decision for me: I've wanted to be a teacher since 2nd grade. I've had a lot of great examples to learn how to be a teacher from: Mrs. Hanson, Mr. Hatch, Mrs. Maxwell, and Mrs. Bridges were my favorite teachers.
I have a few beliefs that deeply influence my teaching style. I believe that time shouldn't be wasted on things that don't matter, and I never make a student do something unless I think it's important. I believe that people learn best from experience. And I believe that taking things too seriously isn't good for you.

I have a ton of different interests, all of which you will probably hear about during our year together. I love to travel! While I've traveled all over the world my go-to vacation spot is Disneyland: Mrs. York and I have annual passes, and it's safe to assume that if it's a long weekend I'll be in Disneyland.
I love to read, and I still hold my elementary school's record for the number of books read in a single year. My favorite book(s) are the Harry Potter series. I used to make fun of my friends for liking Harry Potter until my teacher offered us a day off if we read it, after that I was hooked.
I love going to movies. My bedroom at my parent's house is decorated like a movie theater, complete film reels and concession sign: not to mention the life sized Darth Vader standing in the corner. My favorite movie is The Dark Knight, and you'll probably hear me do the voice of the Joker or Bane from time to time in the classroom.

I am an avid video-game player. I own each of the major consoles, and have a huge collection of games to play on them. A cool story about my passion for video games is that I built my first computer when I was 13 in order to play the first Call of Duty game with my dad (who is an impressive sniper himself.)
I collect Lego sets, and my office is completely full of models I've made. I'm really excited to work with our school's First Lego League team as well.
I also love animals. Mrs. York and I have two cats: Esther, and Beatrice. I have a dog named Sadie, an aviary full of birds, and a pond full of fish. I also have my pet bearded dragon, Norbert, living in the classroom with us.
In 2016 I was named as a Granite Excel Award winning teacher by the Granite Education Foundation. Unfortunately, I didn't get to keep the huge check. I did get a nifty trophy and $1,000 though!
Last summer our daughter Rachel Elizabeth York (Rey) was born on June 12. When my wife and I were first married I had a dream that we had a daughter named Rachel, and seven years later that dream came true. We call her Rey because her initials are R.E.Y., but also because I love Star Wars and wanted to name my daughter after Rey.
